Hawaii Statewide Research and Education Partnership

What is INBRE?

John A Burns School of Medicine LogoIDeA Networks of Biomedical Research Excellence (INBRE) is a federally funded grant program that originates from the National Institute of General Medical Sciences (NIGMS) at the National Institutes of Health (NIH). INBRE promotes the development, coordination, and sharing of research resources and expertise that will expand the research opportunities and increase the number of competitive investigators in the IDeA-eligible states. The core mission of Hawaii INBRE is two-fold. To encourage undergraduate students to pursue a biomedical science career through our PATHway Activity by providing them with research opportunities, mentoring workshops and workforce development at one of our eight academic institutional partners statewide. Also, to enhance the caliber of scientific faculty by providing resource and mentorship opportunities to Junior and Pilot Investigators through the Developmental Research Project Program (DRPP) Core. INBRE serves as a catalyst for the advancement of the research scientist pipeline with the ultimate goal of expanding the biomedical research community to make new and important discoveries for improving health and well-being in the state of Hawaii.

 The INBRE Experience

From some of our recent INBRE student research interns:

I have learned valuable lessons in research, genetic laboratory techniques, friendship, hardships, and an overall better understanding of science!

This experience not only added to the level of learning in the classroom/lab, but it surpassed all my expectations. I was grateful to be a part of this internship and benefited by growing confidence, knowledge, and gaining important scientific skills in a short time frame. The project was not only rewarding but life-changing...”

Why should I consider biomedical research through INBRE?

Doing science in the lab is exciting and rewarding

Research is learning

Doing research builds skills

Research results in the opportunity to exchange new ideas

Research is opportunity

Research helps build the future

What kinds of research opportunities are there?

Biomedical research across the state ranges from:

• Cancer research • Neuroscience research • Immune System research • Natural Product Development • Drug Development • Toxicology • Parasitology • Virology • Cell Stress • Analytical Chemistry • Organic Chemistry • Monoclonal Antibody Production •

Once you become an INBRE student intern, you are an integral part of our network, but more importantly, you are the future of biomedical research in Hawaii.
