We are excited to announce that the registration for the 2023 Annual Biomedical Science & Health Disparities Symposium is now OPEN! The symposium will occur April 20 – 21, 2023, both virtually and in-person.
Event Description: The Annual Biomedical Sciences & Health Disparities Symposium attracts some of the top health science research and ideas from throughout academia in Hawaii. Medical Students, Residents, Medical Fellows, Graduate Students, Post-Doctoral Fellows and Undergraduates are invited to present their work. Research Associates and Faculty are encouraged to attend. The Symposium will have both virtual and live components this year. Friends and family may attend the online event. The live, in-person poster sessions will be closed to the general public.
Day 1 : April 20, 2023 (Mixed Format)
- Graduate Students, Post-Doctoral Researchers (In-Person posters in Sullivan Center)
- Medical Students, Residents, and Medical Fellows (5 min Powerpoint presentations via Zoom)
- Keynote Seminar (In MEB 315 at 12:00 – 1:00 PM, also available via Zoom)

Dr. Han is an Associate Professor and CPRIT scholar at Texas A&M University, Institute of Biosciences & Technology. Before join TAMU, he is an Assistant Professor at The University of Texas Health Science Center at Houston. Dr. Han obtained his PhD from Chinese Academy of Sciences and did postdoc training with Dr. Joseph C. Wu at Stanford University, and Dr. Han Liang at MD Anderson Cancer Center. Dr. Han’s lab focused on harnessing big data for precision oncology. In the past several years, his labs contributed to RNA-targeted therapy, target therapy and immunotherapy, and published several papers in high profile journals, including Cancer Cell, Nature Metabolism, Nature Immunology, Nature Communications, The Innovation, Cell Systems, Cell Reports, Nucleic Acids Research, Genome Medicine, Journal of the National Cancer Institute. He has been invited to contribute review, commentary and spotlight by multiple journals, including Nature Reviews Clinical Oncology, Nature Biotechnology, Trends in Genetics, Trends in Cancer, Trends in Molecular Medicine, Genome Medicine, and Oncogene. To date, he has published >160 peer-reviewed papers, with a total of > 20,000 citations (Google scholar, H-index = 56).

Automating Machine Learning for Predicting Risk of Alzheimer’s Disease

Chair of Department of Computational Biomedicine at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center
Dr. Moore completed a Ph.D. in Human Genetics and an M.A. in Statistics at the University of Michigan. In 1999 he went to Vanderbilt University where he held an Ingram Professorship and served as founding Director of the Advanced Computing Center for Research and Education. He then went to the Geisel School of Medicine at Dartmouth College in 2004 where he held the Third Century Professorship and served as founding Director of the Institute for Quantitative Biomedical Sciences. In 2015, he joined Penn Medicine at the University of Pennsylvania as the founding Director of the Institute for Biomedical Informatics and Senior Associate Dean for Informatics. He joined Cedars-Sinai in 2021 as the founding Chair of the Department of Computational Biomedicine. His research on artificial intelligence methods for the analysis of biomedical data has been continuously funded the NIH for more than 20 years. He is an elected fellow of the American College of Medical Informatics, the International Academy of Health Sciences Informatics, the American Statistical Association, the International Statistics Institute, and the American Association for Advancement of Science. He is Editor-in-Chief of the open-access journal BioData Mining.

Enabling Precision Medicine: Decoding the Human Genome with Deep Learning Models

A key challenge in medicine and biology is to develop a complete understanding of the genomic architecture of disease. Yet the increasingly wide availability of ‘omics’ and clinical data, including whole genome sequencing, has far outpaced our ability to interpret these sequences. Challenges include interpreting the 98% of the genome that is noncoding to identify variants that are functional and may lead to disease, detangling genomic signals regulating cell-lineage-specific gene expression, and mapping the resulting genetic circuits and networks in disease-relevant cell-types to specific phenotypes and clinical outcomes. I will discuss methods that address these challenges, and highlight their applications to cancer and mental health disorders.

Purpose
The National Institute of General Medical Sciences (NIGMS) will host an informational webinar series for faculty and sponsored programs/research development personnel from institutions building research and research training capacity. During the webinars, suggestions will be shared for navigating the process of seeking NIH funding. Attendees will learn considerations for determining research idea and grant writing readiness, selecting opportunities to apply for, effectively writing a grant application, and seeking appropriate feedback. Participation in the webinars are optional and not required for the submission of applications to NIGMS.
Three webinars will be held, addressing different aspects of the process:
