Synthesis of 13C,15N glyphosate and its use for spectroscopic studies in determining the mechanism of glyphosate degradation

Research Summary: Degradation of glyphosate in our water supply is key in preventing glyphosate-related illness. To elucidate the exact mechanism of the decomposition of this herbicide (possibly with common household chemicals such as clorox and iodine), our team will synthesize 13C,15N-labelled glyphosate. Using a variety of spectroscopic techniques (such as NMR, FTIR and MS), we hope to detect the reaction intermediates and products when the labelled glyphosate reacts with these chemicals. Understanding the mechanism of degradation will provide insights on how we will treat our water resources effectively.
